How to play Coordinate Battleships
- Choose the grid: positive numbers (0 to 9) or all four quadrants (โ5 to 5).
- Type a number for x (across) and one for y (up), then press Fire. You can also tap a square to fill in its coordinates.
- Hits and misses are marked on the grid. When a ship is completely hit it is sunk.
- There are three ships: one of length 3 and two of length 2. Ships never touch, and they lie in straight lines.
- Sink all three in as few shots as you can. Perfect play takes 7 hits.
Tips and strategy
- Remember: x is across, y is up. A helpful phrase: “walk along the corridor, then up the stairs”.
- After a hit, fire at the squares directly next to it (up, down, left and right) to find the ship’s direction.
- Ships never touch, so once one is sunk you can skip the squares around it.
- On the four-quadrant grid, negative x is to the left and negative y is downwards.

FAQ
Coordinate Battleships: questions
What are coordinates?
A pair of numbers (x, y) that describes a position on a grid. x tells you how far across, y tells you how far up.
Which comes first, x or y?
x always comes first. A memory trick is that you walk along the corridor (x) before you go up the stairs (y).
What is a quadrant?
One of the four regions of a graph, split by the x-axis and y-axis. Quadrant 1 has positive x and y; the others involve negative numbers.
What age is it for?
About 9 and up. The positive grid fits Year 4 to 6 and the four-quadrant grid fits Year 6 to 8.
