Age 11 ยท Grade 6 ยท Year 7 ยท Class 6
Maths, coding and Rubik's Cube for 11-year-olds.
Eleven is the start of the jump to secondary-school maths. Confidence with fractions and number sense matters more than speed.
Maths
Ratio and proportion, percentages, negative numbers, introduction to algebra, area and volume, averages.
Coding
Python with functions and lists, simple games and puzzles, and web basics. Algorithms such as sorting and searching.
Rubik's Cube
Two-look OLL and PLL, a timer and a practice routine to get faster.
A good first goal
Writing and solving a simple equation and building a small Python project.
A simple week
About 15 to 20 minutes a day. Here is one way to spread it:
| Day | What to do |
|---|---|
| Mon | Ratio and percentage questions |
| Tue | Algebra warm-up |
| Thu | Python project |
| Sat | Cube times and algorithms |

Age 11: questions parents ask
How do we prepare for the jump to secondary-school maths?
Make sure fractions, decimals and negative numbers feel secure, and practise reading word problems slowly. A first look at algebra as 'a letter standing for a number' helps.
Is two-look OLL and PLL too much at eleven?
Not for a child who enjoys the cube. Learn one algorithm at a time and practise on the virtual cube until it is automatic.
What maths should a 11-year-old be learning?
Ratio and proportion, percentages, negative numbers, introduction to algebra, area and volume, averages. Every school sets its own order, so check the textbook your child uses.
Can a 11-year-old learn to code?
Python with functions and lists, simple games and puzzles, and web basics. Algorithms such as sorting and searching.
Can a 11-year-old solve a Rubik's Cube?
Two-look OLL and PLL, a timer and a practice routine to get faster.
What school year is a 11-year-old in?
Roughly Grade 6 in the US, Year 7 in the UK and Class 6 in India. It depends on the country, the school and the birthday.
How much should a 11-year-old practise?
15 to 20 minutes a day is plenty, mixed across maths, coding and puzzles. Short and regular beats long and rare.
