How to use the timer

  • Scramble the puzzle with the moves shown. Hold it with white on top and green in front for a 3ร—3.
  • Hold Space (or press and hold the timer area) until the time turns green. Releasing too early resets it.
  • Release to start. Press any key or tap to stop. A new scramble appears automatically.
  • Mark a time +2 (two seconds added, used when the cube was one quarter turn from solved) or DNF (did not finish).
  • Turn on 15-second inspection to practise like a competition: tap once to start the countdown, then hold and release to begin solving.

What Ao5 and Ao12 mean

An average of 5 (Ao5) takes your last five solves, drops the fastest and the slowest, and averages the middle three. Ao12 drops the best and worst of twelve. Averages are a fairer measure of your speed than one lucky solve, and they are what official competitions record.

Tips for faster solves

Learn the beginner method first, then practise looking ahead so your hands never stop. Our beginner's guide to solving a Rubik's Cube walks through every step, and the notation guide explains the move letters. Want a coach? See our cubing classes.

FAQ

Common questions

Is this a free Rubik's Cube timer?

Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser. Times are saved on your own device only.

How are Ao5 and Ao12 calculated?

Ao5 drops the fastest and slowest of the last five solves and averages the other three. Ao12 drops the fastest and slowest of the last twelve. A DNF counts as the slowest.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Press and hold the timer area until it turns green, lift your finger to start and tap anywhere to stop.

Are the scrambles official?

They are random-move scrambles, which are ideal for practice. Official WCA competitions use random-state scrambles generated by a different program, and the difference is not noticeable in practice.
