Artificial intelligence (AI) is a broad field. Machine learning (ML) is one way to build AI: instead of writing every rule by hand, people train a model on examples so it can find patterns and make predictions. A neural network is one kind of machine-learning model, built from connected layers of small calculations called artificial neurons.

Start with a small prediction problem, then tune one neuron and explore how training can reduce mistakes. The activities use simple numbers and diagrams, so you can begin without coding or advanced maths. They show the core ideas, while making clear that real AI systems are much larger and more complicated.

Each short activity introduces one building block of machine learning. Change the numbers, make a prediction and see how the model's behaviour changes.

The ideas behind AI

Machine learning and neural networks, step by step

A machine-learning model starts with examples. In supervised learning, examples include inputs and known answers called labels. A model makes a prediction; a loss function measures how far that prediction is from the answer. During training, an optimisation method adjusts the model's parameters to reduce that error across many examples.

In a neural network, each artificial neuron combines inputs using learned weights and a bias, then applies an activation function. Layers pass their outputs forward, allowing the network to represent more complex patterns than a single neuron can. The neuron lesson makes the smallest version tangible; the gradient-descent lesson shows the basic idea behind changing parameters during training.

A model should also be checked on examples it did not train on. If it memorises the training examples instead of learning a pattern that transfers, it is overfitting. A useful AI lesson therefore includes data quality, testing, limitations and careful interpretationโ€”not just a model that appears to work once.

Key idea

Training data

Examples a model uses to find a pattern. Poor or unbalanced examples can lead to unreliable predictions.

Key idea

Features and labels

Features are the information given to a model; a label is the known answer in a labelled training example.

Key idea

Weights and bias

Learned numbers that control how strongly a neuron responds to its inputs and where its decision threshold sits.

Key idea

Loss and optimisation

Loss measures prediction error. Training changes model parameters in an effort to make that error smaller.

Key idea

Generalisation

A model's ability to work on new examples it has not seen, rather than only repeating its training data.

Key idea

Generative AI

AI that creates new text, images, audio or other output. A language model generates text by predicting likely tokens in context; its output still needs checking.

What this area covers

Where to start

  • Ages 11 to 13: Start with next-word prediction. It uses examples, counts and percentages.
  • Ages 13 to 16: Continue with the neuron lesson to explore inputs, weights, bias and simple decision rules.
  • Ages 14 and up: Try gradient descent after meeting slope and rate of change. No calculus is required for this visual introduction.

FAQ

AI: questions people ask

What is machine learning in simple words?

Machine learning is a way to build software that finds patterns in examples and uses them to make predictions. People choose the data and task, train the model and check how well it works on new examples.

What is the difference between AI, machine learning and deep learning?

AI is the broad field of building systems that perform tasks associated with intelligence. Machine learning is one approach within AI that learns patterns from data. Deep learning is machine learning that uses neural networks with multiple layers.

How does a neural network learn?

During training, a neural network compares its predictions with known answers, measures the error and adjusts weights and biases to reduce that error. It must also be evaluated on examples it has not trained on.

Do I need to know programming or calculus first?

No. These beginner lessons use diagrams, sliders, percentages and simple arithmetic. Python and more advanced maths are useful later, but are not prerequisites for this introduction.

Is this a complete course in artificial intelligence?

No. It is a visual introduction to prediction, artificial neurons and gradient descent. It explains foundational ideas, not every kind of AI or the full mathematics and engineering behind modern models.

Is this how ChatGPT works?

The lessons show related foundations: language models predict likely next tokens, neural networks process patterns, and training adjusts model parameters. Modern language models use much larger architectures and more advanced training methods than the small demonstrations here.

Is this AI course suitable for children?

The browser lessons are designed for curious learners from about age 11. They do not require an AI account or collect personal details. Parents should check the age rules and privacy settings of any separate AI tool a child uses.

How can a learner continue after these lessons?

Try probability, slope and Python, then build a small project with a teacher or a carefully chosen beginner course. A parent guide explains how to discuss AI safety, privacy and checking answers.
