How to play Grammar Gym

  1. Pick one of nine skills, such as plural nouns, past tense or punctuation.
  2. Read the question and choose an answer, or press 1 to 4 on your keyboard.
  3. Right answers raise your SmartScore, quickly at first and then more slowly. Wrong answers lower it, and a short explanation shows the rule.
  4. As your score rises, the questions move from level 1 to level 3, so you are always working on something just hard enough.
  5. Reach a SmartScore of 100 to master the skill. Your best score for each skill is saved on this device.

Tips and strategy

  • Say the sentence aloud. Your ear often knows the right answer before you can explain the rule.
  • Read the explanation after a wrong answer, even a short one. That is where the learning happens.
  • Come back to a skill the next day. Mastery is easier to keep than to build in one go.
  • Try the skills in order: parts of speech, plurals, past tense, then punctuation.

Learn beyond the game

Explore the idea behind Grammar Gym

Worked example

In โ€œMira has a red bag. ___ carries it to school,โ€ the pronoun is she: it replaces Mira's name and points back to the same person.

Common sticking point

A pronoun needs a clear noun to refer to. If a sentence has two possible people, a reader may not know who they means; repeat the name or rewrite the sentence.

Try it away from the screen

Read a short paragraph and underline repeated names. Replace one name with a pronoun, then check that a reader can still tell who did each action.

Mini challenge

Fix this sentence: โ€œRavi gave Aman his notebook because he had finished.โ€ Who finished? Rewrite it so the meaning is clear in two different ways.

How to use this practice path

Choose one skill at a time: parts of speech, plurals, verb tense, articles, punctuation, then pronouns and word meaning. Read each explanation and revisit the skill after a break.

Where the idea goes next
