How to play Averages and the Mean

  1. Look at the bars and the dashed mean line. It marks the height every bar would have if they were levelled out.
  2. Move the sliders to change the diagram and watch what happens. The readout under the picture shows the numbers.
  3. Answer each question. If you are wrong you get a hint and can try again, with no penalty.
  4. Some steps ask you to make something happen, such as hitting a target value. Experiment until it works.
  5. Finish the lesson to earn XP and see how many questions you got right first time.

Tips and strategy

  • Do not rush. The sliders are there to be played with, so try extreme values as well as sensible ones.
  • Say what you notice out loud or write it down before you press Continue.
  • Use the hint when you are stuck, and then try to explain the answer in your own words.
  • To check a mean, multiply it by how many numbers there are. You should get the total.

FAQ

Averages and the Mean: questions

How do you calculate the mean?

Add all the numbers, then divide by how many numbers there are. The mean of 4, 8, 12 and 16 is 40 ÷ 4 = 10.

What is the difference between mean, median and mode?

The mean is total ÷ count, the median is the middle number once they are in order, and the mode is the number that appears most often.

Because it is the value each item would have if the total were shared equally between them.

Usually Grades 4 to 6 (ages 9 to 12).
