How to play Fractions and Equivalent Fractions

  1. Read what the top and bottom numbers of a fraction mean, using the shaded bar.
  2. Move the sliders to change the diagram and watch what happens. The readout under the picture shows the numbers.
  3. Answer each question. If you are wrong you get a hint and can try again, with no penalty.

  5. Finish the lesson to earn XP and see how many questions you got right first time.

Tips and strategy

  • Do not rush. The sliders are there to be played with, so try extreme values as well as sensible ones.
  • Say what you notice out loud or write it down before you press Continue.
  • Use the hint when you are stuck, and then try to explain the answer in your own words.
  • Always check the parts are equal. A fraction only works with equal parts.

FAQ

Fractions and Equivalent Fractions: questions

What do the top and bottom numbers of a fraction mean?

The bottom number is how many equal parts the whole is cut into. The top number is how many of those parts you have.

What are equivalent fractions?

Fractions that show the same amount, like 1/2, 2/4 and 4/8. You find them by multiplying or dividing the top and bottom by the same number.

Why do the parts have to be equal?

Because a fraction compares a part with the whole. If the parts are different sizes, the fraction would not tell you how much there is.

What age learns fractions?

Halves and quarters start around ages 5 to 7, and equivalent fractions around ages 8 to 10. This lesson suits ages 7 to 11.
