How to play How a Neuron Works (AI)
- Read the first step: a neuron adds up weighted inputs and decides to fire.
- Move the sliders and switches to change the diagram and watch what happens. The readout under the picture shows the numbers.
- Answer each question. If you are wrong you get a hint and can try again, with no penalty.
- Some steps ask you to make something happen, such as hitting a target value. Experiment until it works.
- Finish the lesson to earn XP and see how many questions you got right first time.
Tips and strategy
- Do not rush. The controls are there to be played with, so try extreme values as well as sensible ones.
- Say what you notice out loud or write it down before you press Continue.
- Use the hint when you are stuck, and then try to explain the answer in your own words.
- Work out the weighted sum by hand before you check the output.

FAQ
How a Neuron Works (AI): questions
What is an artificial neuron?
A small calculation that multiplies inputs by weights, adds a bias and gives an output depending on the total. It is loosely inspired by brain cells.
What are weights and bias?
Weights say how much each input matters. The bias shifts the threshold for firing. They are what a network learns.
How does a neural network learn?
By adjusting its weights and biases a little at a time to reduce its mistakes on training examples.
What age is this lesson for?
It suits ages 13 to 18 and anyone curious about AI.
