How to play Number Sense Lab

What you'll learn

Number sense grows when children notice how a number is built, compare it with another and explain a pattern. This set starts with tens and ones, odd and even numbers, and skip counting, then moves to rounding, factors, multiples and square numbers. The grade picker is a starting point; follow the learner's current school work rather than age alone.

Worked example

Take 346. The 3 is worth 300 because it sits in the hundreds place; the 4 is worth 40; the 6 is worth 6. So 346 = 300 + 40 + 6. To round 346 to the nearest hundred, look at the tens digit: 4 is below 5, so it rounds down to 300. Say both the value and the place aloud to make the reasoning visible.

A common sticking point

When comparing 408 and 48, a child may focus on the digits they can see and miss the zero. Line the numbers up by place value: 408 has four hundreds, while 48 has no hundreds. A zero can hold a place even though it adds no value of its own. For factors, list pairs such as 3 × 8 before counting; the pairs stop once they meet in the middle.

Try it away from the screen

Choose a number from a house number, a book page or a price label. Ask the learner to split it into hundreds, tens and ones, then round it to the nearest ten or hundred. For a pattern, count by the same step three times and ask what changes and what stays the same. Keep the discussion low-pressure: a good explanation is more useful than a race.

Mini challenge with answers

Try these together: (1) Write 2,305 in expanded form. (2) Round 782 to the nearest ten. (3) Continue 3, 8, 13, __. Answers: 2,000 + 300 + 5; 780; 18, because five is added each time. Ask the learner to describe the place value or rule they used before checking the answer.

How to use this practice path

Start with one place-value question the learner can explain, then offer one that changes a digit's place or adds a zero. If that feels steady, try a rounding or factor question; if not, return to tens and ones with a drawing. This sequence gives a parent a simple way to notice readiness without a formal test. Save a note of the idea that caused hesitation, then revisit it with a different number the next day.

Where the idea goes next

After place value and patterns feel secure, connect them to estimation. Round two amounts before adding them, then compare the estimate with the exact total. Ask whether the exact result is close to the estimate and whether it is reasonable for the original numbers. This checking habit becomes useful in money, measurement and later algebra, where an answer can be checked for size even when mental calculation is not practical.
