Who sets it
The New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) publishes the state's assessment information and mathematics blueprints.
Who it covers
NJSLA mathematics includes grade-level assessments and high-school mathematics course assessments. The exact required assessment depends on the student's grade and course.
Current name
NJDOE's 2026 assessment information uses NJSLA-A for the adaptive mathematics assessment. Older resources may say NJSLA-M.
Not the same as NJGPA-A
The New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment-Adaptive is a separate assessment. Check the student's school and NJDOE guidance for requirements.
What it covers
Topics to master
Elementary number and operations
Whole numbers, fractions, place value, operations and grade-level word problems.
Ratios and algebra
Proportional relationships, expressions, equations, functions and the number system in middle and high school.
Geometry and measurement
Shape, spatial reasoning, measurement, coordinate planes and mathematical representations.
Statistics, probability and modelling
Read data, reason from information, choose assumptions and explain how a model represents a situation.
What earns marks
- Showing reasoning in constructed responses
- Choosing relevant information and a clear model
- Checking that calculations and units fit the problem
Common mistakes
- Using an old NJSLA paper as the only preparation for the adaptive assessment
- Mixing up NJSLA-A and the separate NJGPA-A
- Practising answers without explaining reasoning or modelling
- Assuming each grade or course uses the same blueprint
A plan
How to prepare, in four phases
- 01Check the grade or course
Confirm whether the student takes a grade-level assessment or an end-of-course mathematics assessment.
- 02Use NJDOE standards and blueprints
Download the current NJSLA-A maths blueprint and compare its reporting categories with school feedback.
- 03Repair concepts
Practise a small set of questions for each weak concept and ask the student to explain the steps aloud.
- 04Get used to item types
Use the state's current practice resources to become comfortable with the digital interface and response styles.
