IOQM explained: the first step to the Indian team for the International Mathematical Olympiad

What IOQM is, who can take it (Class 8 to 12), how the paper is organised, how it connects to RMO, INMO and the International Mathematical Olympiad, and how to prepare. Check official notices for dates and rules.

The Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics (IOQM) is the first stage of the route that leads to India's team for the International Mathematical Olympiad. It is organised by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE, TIFR) together with the Indian Association of Physics Teachers and the Mathematics Teachers' Association (India). It is a serious problem-solving exam, quite different from a school test.

Registration windows, the eligibility age range and the exam date change every year. Always confirm them on the official HBCSE Olympiad website (olympiads.hbcse.tifr.res.in) and its current notices. This guide explains how the exam works and how to prepare.

The basics

  • Who can take it: students who are in roughly Class 8 to Class 12 and who meet the age and nationality rules published each year. The official eligibility notice sets the birth-date window, so read it carefully.
  • Format: a three-hour paper with 30 questions. Every answer is a whole number from 00 to 99, so there are no options to guess from and no long written solutions.
  • Topics: algebra, number theory, geometry and combinatorics (counting and logic), set at a level beyond the school textbook.
  • Where it leads: students who do well can qualify for the next stage, the Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO), and then the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO), followed by a training camp from which the Indian team is chosen. Details of the selection route are published by HBCSE.

How is it different from school maths?

School maths often asks you to apply a method you just learned. IOQM asks you to find the method. The questions are unfamiliar, need a few steps of thinking and reward patience. That is why IOQM preparation is more about practising problem solving than studying more chapters.

What should a student practise?

  1. Number theory: divisibility, remainders, primes, factors, simple modular ideas.
  2. Algebra: equations, inequalities, sequences, factorisation tricks.
  3. Geometry: angle chasing, similar triangles, area, circles.
  4. Combinatorics: counting, arrangements, simple probability.
  5. Previous papers: HBCSE and others publish earlier IOQM and pre-RMO papers. Doing these is the single best preparation.

A realistic way to prepare

  • Start with strong school maths. A student who struggles with Class 8 to 10 maths should not rush into IOQM. Build the base first.
  • Try problems before reading solutions. Spend 15 to 20 minutes on each problem. The struggle is the learning.
  • Keep a problem notebook. Write the problem, your attempt and the idea that finally worked.
  • Do timed sets only occasionally. First learn to solve; then practise speed.
  • Rest and balance. Treat it as a stretch, not a life-or-death exam. Most very strong students do not qualify the first time, and many enjoy the training anyway.

Is IOQM only for future mathematicians?

No. The thinking skills help in every exam, in coding and in daily life. Some students try it just for the experience and the challenge.

How we can help

Our maths competition and Olympiad preparation is about exploring problems and explaining why a solution works, not memorising shortcuts. A parent or guardian can ask about a student's class and level, and we confirm fit before booking. Start with the foundations: Class 8, Class 9 and Class 10 pages, and our general Olympiad guide.

Common questions

What is the full form of IOQM?

Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics.

Who conducts IOQM?

It is organised by HBCSE (TIFR) with the Indian Association of Physics Teachers and the Mathematics Teachers' Association (India). Check HBCSE's current notice for details.

Which classes can take IOQM?

The target group is Class 8 to Class 12, subject to the age window and other conditions in that year's eligibility notice.

Is there negative marking in IOQM?

The answers are whole numbers between 00 and 99, and marking is described in the official notice for that year. Read it before the exam.

How is IOQM different from the SOF IMO?

The SOF IMO is a school-level objective test open from Class 1 and is conducted by SOF. IOQM is the first stage of the national route to the International Mathematical Olympiad, with harder, numerical-answer problems. See our SOF IMO guide.

Can I prepare for IOQM without a coach?

Yes, many do with past papers and good books, but a teacher can help when you are stuck and make the preparation more efficient.
