How to play Balance Scales
- Choose a level: two shapes, three shapes or mixed.
- Look at the balanced scales at the top. Each one tells you how the shapes compare.
- Read the last question: how many of one shape balance the shapes on the left?
- Choose an answer. You get two tries, and then the game explains the working.
- Eight puzzles make a round. A streak of right answers earns a bonus.
Tips and strategy
- Swap shapes: if 2 triangles balance 3 squares, one scale is a recipe for trading shapes.
- Try giving the shapes small numbers that make the scales balance.
- Keep the scale balanced: whatever you do to one side, do to the other.
- Check your answer by putting the numbers back into every scale.

FAQ
Balance Scales: questions
How is this algebra?
Each scale is an equation, and the shapes are unknowns. Finding how many triangles balance a square is solving for a ratio, which is what algebra does with letters.
Is there only one answer?
Yes. The game checks each puzzle by trying every possible set of weights, and only uses puzzles where all the weights that fit the scales give the same answer.
What ages is it for?
About 8 and up. The two-shape level suits ages 8 to 10, and the three-shape level is a challenge for older learners and adults.
Is it free?
Yes. It is free to play, needs no account and runs in your browser.
