FAQ

Mental Maths Tricks Trainer: questions

What is the easiest mental maths trick?

Multiplying by 10 (add a zero) and by 5 (halve, then multiply by 10) are the easiest. Then try ×9 as ×10 minus the number.

How do you multiply by 11 quickly?

For a two-digit number, add its digits and put the sum between them: 23 × 11 = 2 (2 + 3) 3 = 253. If the sum is 10 or more, carry the 1.

How do you square a number that ends in 5?

Take the digits before the 5 (call it n), work out n × (n + 1) and write 25 after it. For 65², 6 × 7 = 42, so the answer is 4225.

How do I know if a number divides by 3?

Add its digits. If the total divides by 3, so does the number. The same works for 9.

Do these tricks work for every number?

Each trick works for every number of the kind it describes, for example the ×11 trick works for every two-digit number. Check the trick card for what it covers.
