How to play Roman Numeral Quest
- Choose a skill: numerals to numbers, numbers to numerals, the rules, or adding in Roman numerals.
- Answer each question. Right answers raise your SmartScore, and every answer comes with a short explanation.
- The questions move from I to XX, then to 99, then to the hundreds.
- Reach 100 to master a skill.
Tips and strategy
- Read from left to right: if a smaller symbol comes before a bigger one, subtract it (IV = 5 โ 1 = 4).
- Only I, X and C can be taken away, and only from the next one or two bigger symbols: IV, IX, XL, XC, CD, CM.
- Write a number one place at a time: 94 = 90 + 4 = XC + IV = XCIV.

FAQ
Roman Numeral Quest: questions
What is XL in Roman numerals?
XL is 40: X (10) placed before L (50) means 50 minus 10.
What does XC mean?
XC is 90: X (10) placed before C (100) means 100 minus 10.
How do you write 94 in Roman numerals?
94 is 90 + 4, which is XC + IV, written XCIV.
Why is 4 written IV and not IIII?
Roman numerals avoid repeating a symbol more than three times, so 4 is written as 5 minus 1: IV. (Some old clock faces do use IIII.)
What is the biggest number the game uses?
The adaptive questions go up to 399, and the rules questions include numerals such as MCMXC (1990) and MMXXVI (2026).
