How to play Times Table Race

  1. Choose which tables to practise (2 3 4 5 10, 6 7 8 9, 11 to 15, or everything from 2 to 12) and how fast the bots are.
  2. Wait for the lights: 3, 2, 1, GO!
  3. Type the answer to each question. It checks itself as soon as you have typed enough digits, or press Enter.
  4. A wrong answer clears the box. It does not slow your car but it does cost you time while you try again.
  5. Finish all 20 questions. Your place and your time are shown at the end.

Tips and strategy

  • Start with the tables you know, then add the ones you find hard. Speed first comes from the easy ones.
  • Use patterns: the 9 times table digits add up to 9 (18, 27, 36), and the 5 times table ends in 0 or 5.
  • If you do not know 7 ร— 8, work it out from one you do know: 7 ร— 8 = 7 ร— 7 + 7 = 56.
  • Race the Tortoise first. Moving up to harder bots is the fun part.

FAQ

Times Table Race: questions

Which times tables should my child learn first?

Usually 2, 5 and 10, then 3 and 4, then 6, 7, 8 and 9. Children often find 6, 7, 8 and 9 hardest, so give those extra short practice sessions.

How many questions are in a race?

Twenty. A first race often takes 1 to 2 minutes, and your best time for each choice of tables is saved in your browser.

What if my child answers wrong?

The box clears and they can try again straight away. Mistakes are counted in the results so you can see accuracy as well as speed.

Does it work for adults practising mental maths?

Yes. The 11 to 15 tables and the hard bots give a real challenge for adults who want quick recall.

Is it free?

Yes, free and with no sign-up. Progress stays in your own browser.
