Comparing fractions: questions

What grade is comparing fractions?

It is usually taught in Grade 4 (Year 5 in England, Class 4 in India, ages 9โ€“10), though schools and countries differ. Try the grade above or below if it feels too hard or too easy.

What does a comparing fractions question look like?

For example: "Which is bigger: 1/2 or 1/4?" The answer is 1/2. With the same bottom number, the bigger top number wins. Otherwise make the bottom numbers the same first.

What should I learn before and after comparing fractions?

Before it, try adding fractions with the same denominator (Grade 4). After it, move on to adding fractions with different denominators (Grade 5).

How can I get better at comparing fractions?

With the same bottom number, the bigger top number wins. Otherwise make the bottom numbers the same first. Practise a little every day, read the hint after each wrong answer, and use the printable worksheet when you want to write it out.
