Pick a puzzle, choose how many scrambles you want, and copy them. For cubes up to 5×5 you can see exactly what the scrambled cube looks like.
How to apply a scramble
Hold the cube with white on top and green facing you, then follow the moves left to right. Each letter turns one face a quarter turn clockwise as you look at it: R right, L left, U up, D down, F front, B back. An apostrophe (') means anticlockwise, and a 2 means a half turn. On big cubes Rw means turn two layers together. If any symbol is unfamiliar, see the notation guide.
Scramble lengths
Typical lengths are 10 moves for a 2×2, 20 for a 3×3, 40 for a 4×4, 60 for a 5×5, 80 for a 6×6 and 100 for a 7×7. The Pyraminx scramble ends with small tip turns written in lowercase, and the Megaminx uses the standard “R++ D--” notation.

Common questions
What is a random-move scramble?
A sequence of random turns with some rules, such as never turning the same face twice in a row. It scrambles the puzzle thoroughly and is perfect for practice.
How many moves should a 3×3 scramble have?
About 20. That is the usual length for practice scrambles, and fully mixes the cube.
What do the letters mean?
R, L, U, D, F and B are the right, left, up, down, front and back faces. An apostrophe means anticlockwise and a 2 means a half turn. The notation guide explains the rest.
