Class 6 maths: the jump to middle school
Class 6 is a big step. Negative numbers, letters standing for numbers and more abstract geometry arrive together. Children who had a gentle primary experience can suddenly feel lost, and a steady plan helps.

What children learn in Class 6 maths
Integers
Negative numbers on a number line, and adding and subtracting them.
Fractions and decimals
Operations with fractions and decimals, including word problems.
Ratio and proportion
Comparing quantities, equivalent ratios and simple unitary method problems.
Introduction to algebra
Using a letter for an unknown number, simple expressions and patterns.
Basic geometry
Points, lines and angles, measuring and constructing, and simple symmetry.
Mensuration and data
Perimeter and area of simple shapes, and reading and drawing bar graphs.
CBSE, ICSE and state boards teach very similar ideas but in a different order and depth, and textbooks are revised from time to time. Tell us your board, your textbook and the topic your child is on, and we will start there instead of guessing.
Common trouble spots
Where Class 6 children usually get stuck
- Sign rules for integers. Use a number line and everyday ideas (temperature, lift floors, bank balance) before any rule.
- A letter as a number. Start with a number machine or "think of a number" puzzles. x is just a hidden number.
- Dividing fractions. Ask how many halves fit in 3, with a drawing, before showing the flip-and-multiply rule.
- Ratio vs fraction. 3:2 and 3/2 are different. Show 5 parts in total with a bar model.

A four-week plan for home
Twenty to thirty minutes on most days is enough. Change the order if your child is already ahead on a topic.
- 01Week 1: Number line and integers
Draw a number line daily and move along it for sums like โ3 + 5 and 2 โ 6.
- 02Week 2: Fractions confidence
Add, subtract, multiply fractions with drawings, then check with the fraction calculator.
- 03Week 3: Ratio and bar models
Solve 3 ratio problems a day with a drawn bar model.
- 04Week 4: First algebra
Number machines and "think of a number" puzzles, then write each as an expression.
Exams do not move

No sign-up, nothing to install. Each tool shows its working so your child learns the method.
Fraction calculator
Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers, with the answer simplified and the working shown step by step.
Use the tool โRatio calculator
Simplify ratios, share an amount in a ratio, or solve a : b = c : x. Handy for recipes, profit sharing, maps and scaling.
Use the tool โPercentage calculator
Find X% of a number, what percent one number is of another, percentage change, add or take off a percentage, and reverse percentages.
Use the tool โLCM & HCF calculator
Find the lowest common multiple and highest common factor (GCD) of up to eight numbers, with a prime factor table that shows why.
Use the tool โArea, perimeter & volume calculator
Area, perimeter, circumference, volume and surface area for 12 shapes: rectangle, triangle, circle, cuboid, cylinder, cone, sphere and more.

How online maths classes work
- Tell us about your child. Share the class, board, textbook or topic, what feels hard and how much time is available. A parent or guardian makes the enquiry.
- We confirm the fit. We suggest a starting point and confirm the format, time and availability before anything is booked. If an introductory lesson or assessment has a fee, we say so up front.
- Learn, practise and review. Interactive lessons with the child writing and talking, practice between sessions and a short update for parents. We do not promise marks or ranks.

FAQ
Class 6 maths: questions parents ask
My child was fine in Class 5 but is struggling in Class 6. Why?
Class 6 introduces more abstract ideas (negative numbers, letters for numbers, ratio) just as school becomes busier. It is common and fixable: find the first idea that isn't solid and rebuild from there.
Is online tuition good for Class 6 maths?
It can be, particularly when the teacher uses a shared whiteboard and your child writes and talks. Ask for a trial session and check that the explanations use drawings and examples.
Which Class 6 topic matters most for the future?
Fractions and the idea of a variable. Almost everything in Classes 7 to 10, from equations to trigonometry, depends on them.
Can you help with Olympiad maths in Class 6?
Yes, as an extension once school maths is comfortable. See our guides on the IMO Olympiad and Math Kangaroo.
