What is the right age for Class 1 in India? Admission age and cutoff dates
What age should a child be for Nursery, LKG, UKG and Class 1 in India: the National Education Policy, why cutoff dates and rules differ by state, board and school, and a free class-by-age calculator.
"What age should my child be for Class 1?" is one of the most common questions Indian parents ask. The answer has become more consistent in recent years, but it still depends on your state, your board and your school. This guide explains the usual rule, why it differs, and how to check it for your child.
The usual pattern
Many schools follow this pattern, counted on a cutoff date:
- Nursery (pre-primary 1): age 3.
- LKG (pre-primary 2): age 4.
- UKG (pre-primary 3): age 5.
- Class 1: age 6.
- Each class after that is one year older, up to Class 12 at age 17.

What the National Education Policy says
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 describes a new structure in which the first stage, the foundational stage, covers about five years: three years of pre-primary (ages 3 to 6) followed by Classes 1 and 2 (ages 6 to 8). Following this, the Ministry of Education has asked states and union territories to align the minimum age for Class 1 to 6 years. Many states and boards have moved in this direction, and some have phased it in over a few years.
Why the answer still differs
- The cutoff date. The date on which the age is counted varies. Many schools use 31 March, while others use 30 June, 31 July, 30 September or 31 December.
- State rules. Each state sets its own policy, and some changed their rules recently.
- Board and school. CBSE, ICSE and state-board schools and central schools can differ, and so can private schools within a state.
- Exceptions. Some schools allow a few months of relaxation or an assessment. Others do not.
Because these rules change, always confirm with the school you are applying to, and check the school's current admission notice.
If your child is a few months short
You have good options:
- Wait a year. A child who is older in the class is often more settled. There is no prize for being youngest.
- Choose another school with a different cutoff date, if that suits you.
- Use the time well. Let the child play, listen to stories, draw, sing, count objects and practise small tasks like buttoning a shirt and holding a pencil. These matter more than early drills.
Getting ready for Class 1
Skills that help a child begin school confidently:
- Language: listens to stories, speaks in sentences, knows a few letters and sounds. See phonics and early reading.
- Numbers: counts up to 20, compares more and less and recognises shapes. Our maths games make this playful.
- Hands and fingers: holds a pencil comfortably, draws and cuts with safety scissors. See handwriting.
- Social skills: shares, waits for a turn and asks for help.
- Routine: regular sleep and meal times.
Do not push reading and writing too early. Children who are comfortable and curious learn faster once school starts.
For parents of older children
If your child is already in school and you are wondering whether they are in the right class for their age, speak to the class teacher. A child who is a little older or younger than others in the class is common and usually fine. Focus on whether they are learning and enjoying school.
