Handwriting demo class: Neat letters, step by step
A complete 45-minute live handwriting class to teach from this screen: an all-about-me ice breaker, finger gym, pencil grip, warm-up patterns, letter families with watch-and-trace, writing your own name, a detective game, a quiz and homework.
All about me
4 minTeacher tip
Say your own name, grade and hobby first, then ask the child and type each answer: the badge fills in as you type. The name is used again later, when the child writes it.
Hello, friend! ๐

Finger gym
5 minTeacher tip
Do every exercise with the child, on camera. Strong, warm fingers make neater letters and less tired hands.
Spider push-ups
Put your fingertips together like a spider on a mirror. Push and bend, push and bend.
Piano fingers
Tap each finger on the table one at a time, thumb to little finger, then back again.
Pinch the peg
Touch your thumb to each fingertip in turn, as if pinching a tiny peg. Then the other hand.
Roll a snake
Roll a thin snake of playdough (or a rolled sock) with your fingertips, then pinch it into dots.
Rainbows in the air
Draw big rainbows, circles and zigzags in the air with your writing hand. Slowly!
Shake and rest
Shake your hands loose, wiggle your fingers, then rest them flat on the table.
Ready to write: grip and sitting
4 minTeacher tip
Check each point on camera and tick it together. If the grip is tight, try a pencil grip or a short pencil (a short pencil makes the tripod grip easier).
โ Ready to write! Great sitting and a great grip.
The tripod grip: pinch the pencil near the point with the thumb and first finger; it rests on the middle finger. The other fingers curl gently under.
Warm-up patterns
6 minTeacher tip
Patterns train the movements letters need: straight lines, curves, points and loops. Watch, trace in the air, then trace on screen.
Letter families
11 minTeacher tip
Teach one family at a time: they start the same way, so one good habit fixes several letters. Pick the letters the child reverses or starts at the bottom.
- ๐ข Start at the green dot.
- โก๏ธ Follow the arrow.
- ๐ Small letters fit between the middle line and the floor; tall letters touch the top line; tails go below.
- ๐ Watch, trace in the air, trace here, then write it on paper.
My name and a sentence
5 minTeacher tip
Type the child's name in the ice breaker first: it appears here dotted. Then let the child copy the sentence on paper while you watch the finger spaces.
Trace your name on the lines. Start with a capital letter, then small letters.
Now copy this sentence on paper. Put a finger space ๐ between the words.
I like drawing.
b or d detective
5 minTeacher tip
b, d, p and q are the letters children mix up most. Say the tip out loud each round, and make the shape with your hands.
Quick quiz
3 minWrap-up
2 minWhat did we practise?
Start at the dot, follow the arrow, sit letters on the line, and leave finger spaces.
How did today feel?
๐ Homework (5 to 10 minutes a day)
- Do the finger gym for 2 minutes before you write.
- Trace each round-the-moon letter (c a d g o q e s) three times on the worksheet, starting at the dot.
- Write your name three times on the lines, with a capital letter first.
- Copy the sentence on the worksheet with a finger space between the words.
