Central idea

One amount can be written in different forms, and we choose the form that helps us compare and decide.

Key concepts

  • Form: What does it look like? 3/4, 0.75 and 75% are three looks for one amount.
  • Connection: How are they connected? Each one is a way of saying "out of 100" or "part of a whole".
  • Function: How does it work? We pick the form that makes a problem easier.

Lines of inquiry

  1. How fractions, decimals and percentages are connected
  2. How we change one form into another
  3. How people use them to make decisions

Learner profile and skills

Thinkers, inquirers and communicators. Thinking skills (comparing, justifying) and communication skills (explaining with maths words).

All about me

Teacher tip

Introduce yourself first (name, grade you teach, a hobby), then ask the child and type the answers into the badge.

See, think, wonder

5 min
Teacher tip

Give 30 seconds of quiet looking. Accept every observation; type the child's wonders on the wall. Do not explain yet: the connection is revealed at the end.

Two comic maths explorers compare a pizza with three of four quarters highlighted, a jug filled to three quarters, and a blank shop sale tag.
Pause for 20 seconds. Ask: โ€œWhat do you see? What do these pictures have in common? What do you wonder?โ€ Add the learnerโ€™s first question to the wonder wall.
75% OFF
3/4 of the pizza is left
0.75 L of milk

What do you see? What do you think? What do you wonder?

Number talk: which one doesn't belong?

4 min
Teacher tip

In a number talk there can be more than one good answer. Ask "Why?" every time; praise reasoning, not speed.

Explore: the hundred grid

10 min
Teacher tip

Let the child drag across the grid. Ask: "How many squares is a quarter? Why 25?" Connect each task to the three readouts.

Fraction0/100
Decimal0
Percent0%
  1. Shade 1/4 of the grid.
  2. Shade 0.3 of the grid.
  3. Shade 45%.
  4. Shade 3/5.
  5. Shade 0.08.

How to change the form

Fraction โ†’ decimal

Make the bottom 10 or 100, or divide: 3/4 = 75/100 = 0.75.

Decimal โ†’ percent

Multiply by 100: 0.75 โ†’ 75%.

Percent โ†’ fraction

Write it out of 100 and simplify: 40% = 40/100 = 2/5.

Now practise

โญ Change the form

Write 3/10 as a decimal.

Write 0.45 as a percent.

Write 20% as a fraction (simplest).

โญโญ Compare

Which is bigger: 3/5 or 55%?

Which is smallest: 0.4, 1/4, 30%?

Order from smallest: 0.7, 2/3, 72%

โญโญโญ Think

A class of 25: 15 walk to school. What percent walk?

Is 7/8 more or less than 85%?

Game: number families

8 min
Teacher tip

Play once, then play again to beat the score. Ask the child to say the family aloud: "three quarters, nought point seven five, seventy-five percent".

Families found 0Time 90s

Each family is one amount in three forms: a fraction, a decimal and a percent. Tap all three cards of a family. The first tap starts the clock.

Inquiry task: which is the best deal?

6 min
Teacher tip

Ask the child to choose a strategy first: change everything to percents? to rupees? Then compare. The thinking matters more than speed.

The jacket sale

A jacket costs โ‚น800 in three shops. Which shop is cheapest?

Shop A1/4 off
Shop B30% off
Shop CYou pay 0.72 of the price

Which shop is cheapest?

Show the working

A: 800 โˆ’ 200 = โ‚น600. B: 800 โˆ’ 240 = โ‚น560. C: 0.72 ร— 800 = โ‚น576. Shop B is cheapest.

The best test score

Three friends compare test scores.

Mia18 out of 25
Leo70%
Sam0.74 of the marks

Who did best?

Show the working

Mia: 18/25 = 72/100 = 72%. Leo: 70%. Sam: 74%. Sam did best.

Quiz: 8 questions

5 min

Reflect

3 min
Teacher tip

Ask the child to justify the learner-profile choice with one example from today.

Which learner profile were you today?

3-2-1 exit ticket

  1. 3 things I learned
  2. 2 connections to real life
  3. 1 question I still wonder about

๐Ÿ  Home learning

  1. Find 3 places where fractions, decimals or percentages appear at home or in a shop (labels, sales, recipes). Write each one in the other two forms.
  2. Shade a 10 ร— 10 grid to show 3/5, then write it as a decimal and a percent.
  3. Ask a family member: when did they last use a percentage? Write their answer and the maths.

๐Ÿ‘ช For parents

Our IB maths classes follow the PYP approach: inquiry first, then skills and practice, with clear feedback after every class. A teacher from our network is matched to your child.
