The year ahead

What children learn in Class 3 maths

Numbers up to 1000

Place value with hundreds, tens and ones, and comparing and ordering.

Add and subtract with regrouping

Carrying and borrowing with 3-digit numbers, including across zeros.

Multiplication tables

Meaning of multiplication as repeated groups, then tables 2 to 10.

Division as sharing

Sharing equally and grouping, linked to tables.

Fractions

Halves, thirds and quarters of shapes and of small collections.

Time, money, measurement

Reading the clock, rupees and paise, length, weight and capacity.

CBSE, ICSE and state boards teach very similar ideas but in a different order and depth, and textbooks are revised from time to time. Tell us your board, your textbook and the topic your child is on, and we will start there instead of guessing.

Common trouble spots

Where Class 3 children usually get stuck

  • Borrowing across zeros. Questions like 300 โˆ’ 167 trip up many children. Practise with base-ten blocks or a place-value chart until the "why" is clear.
  • Learning tables as a list. Chanting alone doesn't last. Link tables to arrays, skip-counting and patterns like the 9s.
  • Fractions look like two numbers. Fold paper and cut chapatis or pizzas. A fraction is a part of one whole, not two separate numbers.
  • Choosing the operation. Underline the question, draw the situation and decide which operation is hiding in it.

A four-week plan for home

Twenty to thirty minutes on most days is enough. Change the order if your child is already ahead on a topic.

  1. 01
Week 1: Place value and regrouping

Use a place-value chart for 5 questions a day, always saying hundreds, tens, ones.

  2. 02
    Week 2: Tables 2, 5 and 10

Skip-count, find patterns and use a short game each day.

  3. 03
    Week 3: Tables 3, 4 and division

Link each multiplication fact to a division fact.

  4. 04
    Week 4: Fractions

Fold, cut and share. Compare 1/2 and 1/4 with real objects.

Working with us

How online maths classes work

  1. Tell us about your child. Share the class, board, textbook or topic, what feels hard and how much time is available. A parent or guardian makes the enquiry.
  2. We confirm the fit. We suggest a starting point and confirm the format, time and availability before anything is booked. If an introductory lesson or assessment has a fee, we say so up front.
  3. Learn, practise and review. Interactive lessons with the child writing and talking, practice between sessions and a short update for parents. We do not promise marks or ranks.

FAQ

Class 3 maths: questions parents ask

My Class 3 child forgets tables. What helps?

Practise little and often, and connect each fact to a picture or pattern. Short daily games work better than a long weekly session. Our free times tables trainer and Times Table Race are made for exactly this.

Is online maths tuition effective for Class 3?

It can be when lessons are interactive and short, and when the teacher can see the child's working. Ask for a trial session and watch whether your child is talking and doing, not just listening.

Should my child learn Vedic maths or abacus now?

Neither is required. Understanding place value and number facts comes first. Some children enjoy mental-calculation methods later, as a bonus. See our guide on abacus, Vedic maths and mental maths.

Do you cover my school's textbook?

Share the board and textbook and the topic your child is on. We work with what the school is teaching and add practice around it.
