The year ahead

What children learn in Class 4 maths

Large numbers

Place value for thousands and beyond, comparing, rounding and reading big numbers aloud.

Multiplication and division

2-digit by 1-digit and 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication; division with remainders.

Factors and multiples

Finding factors, multiples and simple patterns in numbers.

Fractions

Equivalent fractions, comparing and adding fractions with the same denominator.

Decimals begin

Tenths and hundredths through rupees, paise, metres and centimetres.

Area, perimeter, angles, time

Counting squares for area, walking around a shape for perimeter, right angles and 24-hour time.

CBSE, ICSE and state boards teach very similar ideas but in a different order and depth, and textbooks are revised from time to time. Tell us your board, your textbook and the topic your child is on, and we will start there instead of guessing.

Common trouble spots

Where Class 4 children usually get stuck

  • Long multiplication. Mistakes are often place-value slips (forgetting the zero). Use grid or box multiplication first, then the standard method.
  • Division with remainders. Children memorise steps without meaning. Share objects, then see what's left over.
  • Fractions that look the same. Use fraction strips or the Fraction Pizza game to see why 2/4 and 1/2 are equal.
  • Area vs perimeter. Colour the inside for area and trace the edge for perimeter. Say the words every time.

A four-week plan for home

Twenty to thirty minutes on most days is enough. Change the order if your child is already ahead on a topic.

  1. 01
Week 1: Place value in thousands

Read, write and compare 4- and 5-digit numbers. Build them with place-value cards.

  2. 02
    Week 2: Multiplication grid

Do 3 questions a day with a grid method, then check with the standard method.

  3. 03
    Week 3: Division and remainders

Share objects equally and record the remainder in a sentence.

  4. 04
    Week 4: Fractions and decimals

Use rupees and paise to see tenths and hundredths.

Working with us

How online maths classes work

  1. Tell us about your child. Share the class, board, textbook or topic, what feels hard and how much time is available. A parent or guardian makes the enquiry.
  2. We confirm the fit. We suggest a starting point and confirm the format, time and availability before anything is booked. If an introductory lesson or assessment has a fee, we say so up front.
  3. Learn, practise and review. Interactive lessons with the child writing and talking, practice between sessions and a short update for parents. We do not promise marks or ranks.

FAQ

Class 4 maths: questions parents ask

My Class 4 child is good at sums but bad at word problems. Why?

Reading and choosing an operation are separate skills from calculating. Practise drawing the situation, underlining the question and saying in words what you will do before calculating.

When should decimals be introduced?

Most books introduce tenths and hundredths in Class 4 or 5 through money and measurement. If your child understands place value, decimals feel like a natural extension.

Is homework help included in online classes?

We explain methods and check understanding, and we use the topic your child is working on at school. The aim is a child who can do homework independently, not one who has the answers handed over.

What if my child is behind?

We find the first gap, often an earlier idea like place value or a table, and rebuild from there. Working from the gap is quicker than repeating this year's chapters over and over.
