Beginner method ยท step 6 of 7

Step 6: Put the corners in place.

Almost there. In this step the four yellow corners go to the right spots, even if they are not turned the right way yet. You will use one algorithm that moves three corners in a circle and leaves the fourth alone.

Goal of this step Each corner sits between its three centre colours. The yellow stickers may still point the wrong way.

What counts as in place

A corner is in place if its three colours are the colours of the three centres around it. It does not matter which way it is turned. Look at all four top corners and find one that is in place.

One corner in place

Hold the cube so that corner is at the top front-right. Do U R U' L' U R' U' L. That corner stays and the other three move in a circle. If they are in place now, done. If not, do it again.

No corner in place

Do the algorithm once from any side. One corner will now be in place. Then use the rule above.

All four in place

Go straight to step 7. Do not do the algorithm.

Watch it, step by step

Press play to watch the moves on a cube, or step through them one at a time. Drag the cube to look from another side.

Three corners move in a circleThe corner at the front right stays; the other three corners move one place round.

Turn on JavaScript to watch this on a 3D cube. The moves are: U R U' L' U R' U' L

  1. U
  2. R
  3. U'
  4. L'
  5. U
  6. R'
  7. U'
  8. L

Common mistakes

  • Holding the correct corner in the wrong place. It must be at the top front-right.
  • Looking at the yellow stickers instead of the three colours. Position comes first, turning comes later.
  • Doing the algorithm when all four corners are already in place.

FAQ

Step 6: questions

Do I need to worry about the edges?

No. The algorithm leaves them exactly where they are.

How many times will I use it?

At most three times, even for a mixed-up last layer: once if no corner is in place, then at most twice more.

Why do the yellow stickers look wrong at the end?

Because turning comes in step 7. The corners are in the right places but not yet turned.

Is there a quicker way to do this step?

Yes. Speedcubers use a corner algorithm called the A-perm that does the same job with a different set of moves.
