Warm-up ยท think first

Two angles form a straight line. One angle is 70ยฐ. What is the other angle in degrees?

Show the answer

110ยฐ. Angles on a straight line add up to 180ยฐ, so 180ยฐ - 70ยฐ = 110ยฐ.

Teacher tip: Ask students what special shape a 180ยฐ angle creates.

Six minutes with Captain Calc. Vote, say why, then show the answer.

  1. Which angle pair does not belong with the others? (30ยฐ and 60ยฐ ยท 45ยฐ and 45ยฐ ยท 20ยฐ and 70ยฐ ยท 50ยฐ and 130ยฐ)
Answer: 50ยฐ and 130ยฐ does not belong. The first three pairs add up to 90ยฐ (complementary), but 50ยฐ and 130ยฐ add up to 180ยฐ (supplementary).
  2. Would you rather find the complement of 38ยฐ or the supplement of 138ยฐ? (Complement of 38ยฐ ยท Supplement of 138ยฐ)
    Answer: Both equal 52ยฐ! 90ยฐ - 38ยฐ = 52ยฐ and 180ยฐ - 138ยฐ = 52ยฐ.
  3. Two acute angles are complementary. (Always ยท Sometimes ยท Never)
Answer: Always. Two acute angles are each less than 90ยฐ, and two acute angles can add up to 90ยฐ.
  4. An angle is equal to its complement. What is the measure of this angle in degrees?
    Answer: 45ยฐ. If an angle equals its complement, x + x = 90ยฐ, so 2x = 90ยฐ and x = 45ยฐ.
  5. Where do you see parallel lines cut by a transversal in everyday life?
Answer: You can see them on railway tracks with cross sleepers, window grills, ladder steps, and zebra crossings on roads.

Complementary and Supplementary Angles

Two angles are complementary if their sum is 90ยฐ.

Two angles are supplementary if their sum is 180ยฐ.

Captain Calc calls complementary angles the Right-Angle Crew and supplementary angles the Straight-Line Squad!

Example 1

Find the complement of 54ยฐ.

  1. Complementary angles add up to 90ยฐ.
  2. Subtract 54ยฐ from 90ยฐ.
  3. 90ยฐ - 54ยฐ = 36ยฐ.

Answer: 36ยฐ

Example 2

Find the supplement of 115ยฐ.

  1. Supplementary angles add up to 180ยฐ.
  2. Subtract 115ยฐ from 180ยฐ.
  3. 180ยฐ - 115ยฐ = 65ยฐ.

Answer: 65ยฐ

FAQ

Lines and angles: questions

What is the main difference between complementary and supplementary angles?

Complementary angles add up to 90 degrees, forming a right angle. Supplementary angles add up to 180 degrees, forming a straight line.

Do linear pairs always form a straight line?

Yes, by definition, the non-common arms of a linear pair form a straight line, which means their sum is always 180 degrees.

Are alternate interior angles equal for any two lines?

No, alternate interior angles are equal only when the two lines cut by the transversal are parallel.
